Becoming a DEA Agent: How to become a DEA Agent

This intense job involves the enforcement of illegal drug laws and controlled substance laws, including growing and distributing drugs. To become a DEA agent, you must have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in criminal justice or a related field. There is also a tight age limit for DEA agents: you need to be at least 21 years old but no older than 36. After you are accepted, you will undergo specialized training to prepare you mentally, physically and professionally.

Degree Requirements to become a DEA Agent:

If you know that you want to be a DEA agent early on, then it is strongly recommended that you major in Criminal Justice, Political Science or a related field. Other subjects that could be useful to a career as a DEA agent include foreign languages or economics. All of these majors prepare DEA agents to communicate with suspects, witnesses and special contacts; evaluate drug businesses in different areas or countries; and understand the basic laws and Constitutional rights of citizens.

Duties of a DEA Agent: What are the duties / traits of a successful DEA Agent?

DEA agents are responsible for enforcing drug laws, investigating dealers, pursuing distribution or growing leads in other countries, and protecting U.S. citizens from drug dealers and the illegal use of drugs. You will also be expected to conduct surveillance, work in dangerous neighborhoods, and run criminal investigations. DEA agents are employed by the federal government.
