Sharing borders with Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and the Gulf of Mexico, the state has four distinct natural regions that include coastal plains to the south and mountains to the north. Montgomery is the state capital, but Birmingham is the largest city. Currently, the state is facing a 9.4 percent unemployment rating, which is on par with the United States average of 9.5 percent. In total, there are 14 four-year public universities, 26 two-year colleges, and around 17 private schools. There are two medical schools, five law schools, a dental school, an optometry school, and two pharmacy schools spread across the state. College football is a favorite pastime in Alabama, with the greatest and most tense rivalry existing between Auburn University and the University of Alabama.
