Arizona is the state most closely associated with the American Southwest. With a desert climate that includes very hot summers and mild winters, and a rich Native American heritage, Arizona is a unique state. Arizona is also home to the Grand Canyon National Park, the Navajo National Monument, Meteor Crater, and is one of the states to make up the Four Corners. The capital of Arizona and its largest city is Phoenix, followed closely by Tucson. The state is currently facing a 10 percent unemployment rate, slightly higher than the national average of 9.5 percent. The state has three public four-year universities: the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University. There is also a wide selection of for-profit, private colleges, as well as public two-year community colleges and vocation school. In total, there are approximately 100 higher education institutions available to serve the students of Arizona.

In Arizona, around 310,000 crimes were reported last year. Roughly 30,000 of these crimes were considered violent, while the remaining were classified as property crimes. Arizona averaged around 6 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, well above the national average of 4.7 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Of the violent crimes reported, the majority were classified as assaults, followed by robberies, rapes and finally, murders. Conversely, Arizona averages 56 property crimes per 1,000 residents, again well above the national average of 34. This means one in every 17 Arizona residents can expect to be a victim of a property crime. The two greatest property crimes committed were motor vehicle thefts and burglaries. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, in 2009, January saw the greatest number of incidents, while February recorded the fewest. As with many other states, the majority of crimes are committed within metropolitan areas, including Phoenix, the capital and largest city, Tucson, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, Tempe, Peoria, and Chandler.
