Delaware is a tiny state with only three counties, and a three-hour drive will get you from the top to the bottom of the state. You are never more than three hours from Delaware’s attractive coastline. Dewey Beach is particularly popular with college students over spring break and is known for being a party town due to its restaurants, bars and nightlife. Newark, home to the University of Delaware, is a major college town here. The state’s coastal location on the Atlantic keeps it from getting as cold in the winters as neighboring states and helps foster hot, humid summers. There’s no sales tax in Delaware, a perk shoppers take advantage of. Those seeking employment here may be interested in the fact that Delaware’s unemployment rate sat at 8.4 percent as of August 2010, which is not only less than the national unemployment rate, but also reflects Delaware’s steadily decreasing unemployment rate since March.
In 2008, Delaware had a crime rate 14 percent higher than the national average, according to the National Institute of Corrections. Property crimes made up 83.6 percent of that crime rate, which is 10 percent higher than the national average, the NIC notes. The other 19.2 percent of that crime rate consists of violent crimes, such as murder, rape, and robbery. This percentage was 35 percent higher than other states. In Delaware, there were 4,288 crimes per 100,000 people, as opposed to the nationwide rate of 3,668 crimes per 100,000 people, according to the NIC. Breaking that down further, there were 703 violent crimes per 100,000 people, compared to 455 violent crimes per 100,000 people nationally. Finally, there were 3,585 property crimes per 100,000 people, compared to 3,213 property crimes per 100,000 people nationally. Crime is generally concentrated in the larger cities such as Wilmington, where news reports recently chronicled anti-violence rallies.
