Despite being the 14th largest state in terms of land area, Idaho has a population estimated to have been 1,545,801 in 2009, which ranks it as the 39th most populous state. The unemployment rate in Idaho, which as of August 2010 hovered around 8.9 percent, was a little below the current national average. In 2004, the state brought in about $43.6 billion dollars, most of which came from its agricultural production. Idaho produces, in fact, one third of the potatoes grown in the United States. Besides having an agricultural-based economy, the state also benefits from its lumber, mining, and manufacturing industries. In fact, science and technology businesses account for a quarter of the state’s total revenue. Education in the state, however, does not reflect the strength of its economy. According to the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, only a small number of residents have a bachelor’s degree and few go on to pursue higher education in the state. Of those that do, only forty three percent earn a bachelor’s degree within six years.
Crime rates in Idaho are much less than the national average, placing it just behind New Hampshire, North Dakota, and South Dakota as far as total crimes per 100,000 people. In 2008, the national violent crimes rate was 455, but Idaho’s was only 229. The most common crimes in the state include rape and burglary. However, Idaho actually incarcerates more of its population than does the rest of the nation, punishing 471 adults per 100,000 people. The national average for incarceration is 447 per 100,000. On average, residents of Idaho pay in taxes about $21,000 per inmate, while nationally, the average cost of an inmate is $28,689. Boise, the state’s capitol, has experienced an impressive drop in crime rates between 1998 and 2008, with its largest drop, an 8 percent decrease, occurring between 2006 and 2007. Compared to other cities its size, Boise has less crime for its population of around 200,000.
