Though it is famous for the Kentucky Derby and bluegrass music, Kentucky has much more to offer visitors and residents as well. The state consistently ranks as one of the cheapest places to live in the country as the cost of living is relatively low. That means that every dollar goes further in the Bluegrass State than in other areas where property and goods may be much more expensive. Unfortunately, Kentucky was hit hard by the economic recession, which shows in its high unemployment rate of 10 percent in August 2010, which is 9.6 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yet, with more education, Kentucky residents could see a real boost in economic prosperity. Kentucky has plenty of quality higher education institutions. There are approximately eight public universities, including Kentucky State University and the University of Kentucky, along with 16 community and technical schools. Numerous private colleges and universities also add to the state’s higher learning scene, including Transylvania University and Midway College.
Crime in Kentucky has decreased overall from 2008 to 2009, the most recent data available from the Kentucky State Police. There were 119,785 crimes reported in 2009, a 1.82 percent difference from the 122,009 crimes reported in 2008. Out of these reported criminal activities, larceny theft was the most common with 73,295 reported cases, followed by burglary with 28,055 reported cases. There were 8,126 reported cases of violent crimes, which include aggravated assault, rape, and murder. Like most states, these crimes occurred in the greatest numbers in highly populated metropolitan areas, such as Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green. University campuses also are common sites for criminal activity, with the University of Kentucky reporting the most crime in 2009, the majority of which were larceny theft and burglary. The report compiled by the Kentucky State Police stated that a serious crime occurs in the Bluegrass State every four minutes and 23 seconds, which is an alarming statistic to keep in mind. For this reason, criminal justice majors are in great demand in Kentucky.
