Criminal Justice Degrees Guide

Criminal Justice Colleges in Louisiana

There are a wide variety of programs available through universities offering criminal justice degrees. Below you will find a listing of schools by city as well as online criminal justice colleges that offer classes throughout Louisiana.

Louisiana culture has long been influenced by the French, Spanish, Indian, and African, thanks in no small part to the roles that those peoples played in the formation of modern Louisiana. Cajun festivals and jazz music blend together to create the Pelican State’s unique flavor. Louisiana also boasts popular institutes of higher education. Tulane University draws in droves of students every year, and the Louisiana State University remains the largest public university system in the Pelican State. Split into the University of Louisiana system, Louisiana community and technical college system, Louisiana State University system, and Southern University system, the state offers plenty of choices for those seeking a college education. Those looking to work in Louisiana will also find it to be a thriving place. The August 2010 unemployment rate was a low 7.6 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is well below the national average of 9.6 percent. However, the rate has been slowly creeping up since April, so workers and new graduates should still be wary of the fluctuating economy.

Though the state is a welcoming one, it also unfortunately has a higher crime rate than the national average, clocking in with a total of 4,479 crimes per 100,000 people in 2008, the most recent data available from the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) reported. This was a full 18 percent higher than the national average of 3,668 crimes per 100,000 people for that year. Out of these crimes, the majority were property crimes, such as theft or vandalism, with violent crimes, such as assault or rape, as the second most common type of crime. Convicted criminals are locked up in one of Louisiana’s 105 jail facilities, which have a combined capacity of a staggering 31,635 inmates. All of these facilities are necessary due to the Pelican State’s high incarceration rate, which is 48 percent higher than the national average, according to the NIC. Yet, taxpayers in this state only pay about half of what most other state taxpayers pay for the maintenance of their jails and inmates.
