Maine, one of the six New England states, is known as the Pine Tree State. About 90 percent of the land is covered with forestry. But it’s also known for its oceanic scenery, which includes lighthouses, beaches, fishing villages, and tons of offshore islands lining the coast, according to the State’s website. Like most of the east coast, Maine tends to have warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. About 1.3 million people reside within 16 different counties in Maine, a large concentration of which is located in Portland, Lewiston and Bangor. While Maine’s population is comparatively smaller than most states already, population is projected to increase only by 7 percent within the next 15 years, according to a statewide report administered by the Public Policy of Higher Education. According to the report, Maine ranks fair in comparison to other states in higher education performance. While enrollment consistently stays about the same, hovering around 52 percent students enrolling in a public, four-year university and 22 percent in a private, four-year institution, cost to attend college is much higher than other states, according to the report. This directly affects the number of residents who possess a bachelor’s degree, and in turn, the state’s economy. Maine has an 8.0 unemployment rate, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The crime rate in Maine is about 30 percent lower than the national average, according to the most recent statistics available from the National Institute of Corrections. While property crimes, such as home burglaries and auto theft, accounted for about 95.4 percent of all crimes in Maine in 2008, only 3.2 percent accounted for violent crimes. According to the Institution, Maine has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the U.S., which is about 74 percent below the national rate. Among the most crime-ridden cities are Portland, Augusta, and Biddeford. Some of the safest cities include Topsham, Rockland and Caribou. Maine’s Department of Corrections is responsible for not only inspecting the 15 jail facilities disbursed within 16 counties, but also the operation of six prison facilities. A staff of more than 700 assists in supervising 2,206 inmates. According to the Institution, in addition to the lowest violent crime rate, Maine also has one of the lowest number of incarcerated inmates, which is about 66 percent lower than the national average.
