Maryland is often referred to as the "American Miniature" because apart from a desert, every different type of terrain located within the nation can also be found in the state, according to the state’s official Website. While the Chesapeake Bay divides the state into different regions, there are no natural lakes. Temperatures vary depending on region, but Maryland usually experiences hot, humid summers and short, mild to cool winters. Because Maryland is located near the Atlantic coast, it does sometimes experience tropical cyclones. More than 5.6 million people reside within 23 different counties in Maryland, large concentrations of which are located in Baltimore, Frederick and Rockville. Maryland’s population is predicted to increase by 21 percent within the next 15 years, according to a statewide report administered by the Public Policy of Higher Education. According to the report, Maryland ranks decently in comparison to other states in higher education performance. Since the early 90s, the report states Maryland has consistently been a high performer in the number of first time, full-time college students earning a bachelor’s degree within six years of enrollment. Despite the large number of residents who possess a bachelor’s degree, residents lost about 6,000 jobs in August, raising Maryland’s unemployment rate to 7.3 percent, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The crime rate in Maryland is 12 percent higher than the national average, according to the most recent statistics available from the National Institute of Corrections. While property crimes such as home burglaries and auto theft accounted for about 84.9 percent of all crimes in Maryland in 2008, about 17.1 percent accounted for violent crimes such as murder, rape and aggravated assault, most of which occurred in Baltimore. Other cities with a high rate of criminal activity include Silver Spring and Wheaton. While the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards is responsible for overseeing the 29 different jail facilities, as of 2009 the Division of Correction, which is part of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, now operates the 11 prison facilities. A staff of more than 9,000 assist in supervising the 22,255 inmates. Despite having a higher crime rate than the national average, in 2009, Maryland had one of the lowest number of incarcerated inmates, which was about 12 percent lower than the national average, according to the Institution.
