Michigan is located in the Midwest and is the heart of the Great Lakes Region, bordering Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior. Michigan is also the only state in the union to consist of two separate peninsulas. This close proximity to water heavily influences life in Michigan, and the state boasts the third most registered recreational boats in the country behind California and Florida. Unfortunately, Michigan has an unemployment rate of 14 percent, which is significantly higher than the national rate of 9.5 percent. In higher education, Michigan provides students with many options, including more than 30 private colleges and universities, 11 seminaries, 15 public universities, 31 community colleges, and eight for-profit colleges. Michigan residents like to brag on the fact that Michigan State University boasts one of the largest student enrollments of any college in the United States. Also, Michigan State, Wayne State University and the University of Michigan have reputations for being leading research institutions in America. Unfortunately, Michigan also has the fifth lowest investment in higher education, and the seventh highest tuition rates in the United States.
In 2009, Michigan reported a population of nearly 10 million residents. And with more than 550,000 crimes committed, the state has a crime index of 333,465. The greatest number of crimes reported in the state involved property crimes (283,000), larceny and theft (177,700), aggravated assault (32,000), and vehicular theft (30,000). With these figures, Michigan ranks 32nd in property crimes, 16th in murder, 3rd in forcible rapes, 19th in robberies, 13th in aggravated assault, 22nd in burglary, 37th in larceny and theft, and 11th in vehicle thefts. Also, the state ranks 8th in violent crimes with a state median of 5.62 crimes committed per 1,000 residents, which is slightly higher than the national median of 4.7 crimes per 1,000 people. This means that one in every 177 Michigan residents could become a victim of violent crimes. The majority of crimes committed and reported in Michigan occur within urban settings, including Detroit, Michigan’s largest city, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Lansing, the state capital, Holland, and Kalamazoo.
