Minnesota, a Midwestern state, is also known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." Roughly 60 percent of the state’s population resides in the "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Residents of the state are known for their very cheerful dispositions, which helped coined the phrase "Minnesota nice," and unusual accents, characterized by long vowel sounds. Currently, Minnesota is facing a 6.8 percent unemployment rate, which is significantly lower than the national median of 9.5 percent. In higher education, Minnesota supports a network of public and private colleges, including 32 institutions that belong to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, and five campuses of the University of Minnesota, including Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester and Minneapolis. There are also 20 private colleges, which include six ranked by the U.S. News and World Report of top national colleges. Minnesota also has 8 for-profit institutions spread across a dozen campuses state-wide.
In 2009, Minnesota recorded a population of around 5,266,000 people. With around 300,000 crimes reported to authorities that year, the state has an average crime index of 151,925. The largest number of crimes committed included property crimes (140,000), larceny or theft (105,000), burglary (25,500), and violent crimes (12,800). With these numbers, Minnesota ranks 31st in the country in property crimes, 45th in murders, 17th in forcible rapes, 36th in aggravated assaults, 36th in burglary, 27th in larceny, and 37th in vehicle thefts. In violent crimes, Minnesota ranks 39th in the country, with a state median of 3.10 crimes committed per 1,000 residents. This number is slightly lower than the national average of 4.7 violent crimes per 1,000 citizens. Also, because of the state’s rural nature, the number of crimes committed per square mile within the state, 31, is much lower than the national average of nearly 50.
