Due in large part to its small population of about 620,000, the crime rate in Vermont is fairly low. In 2008, Vermont had 16,621 total index crimes, which are defined as homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, auto theft and arson, according to the Vermont Crime Index. With 11,778 cases reported in 2008, larceny-theft was by far the most common crime in Vermont, the index showed. Also of note is that Vermont only had 17 homicides that year. Vermont’s 2008 crime rate was 27 percent lower than the national average, according the National Institute of Corrections. Vermont has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the nation, and the NIC notes that property crimes made up 94.9 percent of the crime rate in the state. Larger cities such as Burlington and Rutland report more crimes than smaller cities.
