Criminal Justice Colleges in Washington

There are a wide variety of programs available through universities offering criminal justice degrees. Below you will find a listing of schools by city as well as online criminal justice colleges that offer classes throughout Washington.

Washington is a traditional Pacific Northwestern state, characterized by mountain ranges and rugged coastlines. Around 60 percent of the state’s population lives within the Seattle metropolitan area, which clearly makes the city the state’s largest. Interestingly, Washington was named after the first American president, George Washington, and is the only state in the union to be named after a president. The state capital is Olympia, which is located close to the eastern coastline. The state is also home to Mount Rainier, a dormant volcano belonging to the Cascade Range. Currently, residents of Washington are facing an unemployment rating of 8.6 percent, which is slightly lower than the national average of 9.5 percent. Washington has six public state universities, Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, Evergreen State College, University of Washington, and Western Washington University. There are 26 private colleges, which include Bible and seminary schools. Also, there are more than 30 community colleges serving the state.

Washington recorded a population of around 6.6 million people in 2009. With approximately 530,000 crimes reported to authorities that year, the state maintains a crime index of around 266,000. The greatest crimes committed involved property crimes (244,000), larceny and theft (168,000), burglary (53,000), and violent crimes (22,000). With these statistics, Washington ranks 13th in the country in property crimes, 36th in murders, 11th in forcible rapes, 28th in robberies, 31st in aggravated assaults, 16th in burglaries, 13th in larceny, and 6th in vehicle thefts. In violent crimes, Washington ranks 29th in the country, with an average crime rate of 3.69 per 1,000 residents. This number is slightly lower than the national average of 4.7 crimes per 1,000 residents. Also, despite the rural nature of the state, Washington has a rating of 84 crimes committed per square mile, which is much higher than the national median of nearly 50 crimes per square mile.
